Opioids are highly addictive and may result in major adverse effects including life-threatening respiratory troubles.  There is certainly some evidence of babies remaining born with neural tube defects (a dilemma with the backbone along with the nerves coming in the backbone) if codeine is used early in pregnancy and of some infants displaying
